The Flip

Today, we use “cocktail” to describe basically every mixed drink, but this is a relatively new phenomenon. There are whole categories that are no longer common to see on a menu, and if they do appear, they’re simply listed as one of the cocktails.

The Flip is an example of this. Traditionally the Flip was an English sailor’s drink, made by adding rum or brandy and sugar to a bit of beer. It was served hot, usually heated with a red hot poker that caramelized the drink.

As the drink made its way to the US, the beer was replaced with an egg, making the flip more like an eggnog. Also, with the addition of eggs, the Flip started to be served cold. But like all drinks, over the years, Flips have changed and evolved. Arguably the most popular Flip currently is the Death Flip, the recipe for which is below:

Death Flip

1oz blanco tequila

1/2oz Jägermeister

1/2oz Yellow Chartreuse

1/4oz rich simple syrup (2:1 sugar to water)

1 whole egg, white and yolk

Add all ingredients into a shaker. First give this a dry shake(without ice), before adding ice and shaking again. Strain into a chilled coupe glass and garnish with some freshly grated nutmeg.
